Our journey began in 2010, when our founder Jayne Nash has a passion for creating a business that would make a difference. Today, Jacanadesigns.com has grown into a successful company that continues to innovate and lead in the sustainable business industry.
All Jayne Nash Handmade Jewellery is carefully and individually crafted by Jayne. Having access to an enamelling kiln, sparked an avenue of craft exploration that was unintended, but ultimately fascinating for Jayne. She obtained a few powdered vitreous enamels and some copper blanks to try it out and realised she had found her niche. Using all of her creative experience she found she could now produce something that is not only artistically beautiful, but also wearable and long-lasting. Because of the nature of handcrafting, each piece is one of a kind, so you will never see someone wearing the same item. Jayne uses recycled copper; cutting and forging her own copper blanks and, where possible, makes her own copper findings such as earwires, pendant bails, clasps and jump rings. She uses various techniques to embellish the copper and enamel with designs, texture and colour as well as combining the pieces with natural gems, glass beads and stones to produce a unique work of art that can be treasured for many years.
About copper and enamel
Copper is an extremely durable metal and is often used in products designed to last a very long time, such as building wire, water pipes, and tube fittings. When used for jewellery, copper will last a lifetime or longer, if cared for properly. Copper is sometimes used as a base for jewellery on top of which another metal is plated, such as silver or platinum. It is also the 3rdmost recycled metal in the world. Over 80% of the copper mined since it was discovered thousands of years ago is still in use today. The body uses copper for proper bone, nervous system, joint, and circulatory system health. Some people find it beneficial to wear copper jewellery for the purpose of having a small amount of copper absorbed through the skin. Most people have the ability to take in as much copper as their body needs and block any excess, which makes copper jewellery perfectly fine, and perhaps even beneficial, for most. Enamelling is a very ancient craft dating back to at least circa the 12th century BC. It is the art of fusing glass to a metal base - usually Copper, Silver and Gold. The enamel consists of very fine powdered glass coloured with the help of metal oxides and is widely used by artists and in jewellery, famously in Russia’s Fabergé eggs. The final glassy finish so typical of vitreous enamel is produced by firing in furnaces at temperatures up to 900 °C. As it cools, it fuses to give glass-coated metal. This ‘firing’ process gives vitreous enamel its unique combination of properties. The smooth glass-like surface is hard; is scratch, chemical and fire resistant, is easy to clean and hygienic.
